This has always been a topic loved by all non malays in Malaysia for many years since the independence was fought for and gained. I am pretty sure the non bumiputeras of our land would love to think that they are being discriminated, I on the other hand would like to think otherwise. As far as i am concerned, discrimination has a whole different meaning compared to what we refer to as discrimination. When the whites started making ground on the united states of America, the red indians rebelled against them because they knew that it was their land and they had to fight for the rights in order to keep the natural system going on. The whites and the indians fought a war and the indians lost. The whites took over and the people who were the rightful owners lost their rights and they just lived with it from then on. Whenever we listen to this story, most of us sympathize the indians and we feel that they should have at least got minimal rights as natives but the ugly truth is they did not and things definitely happened for a reason. The United States of America is today one of the most powerful countries in the world and if the indians were to remain leaders till this day, who knew what would have happened.
It is a very similar story in Malaysia, where the Malays are the earliest rightful owners of the land even though they came from various locations. The only difference is that the rightful owners are receiving the rights that they should receive and we, the non-malays are not receiving as much and this is totally understandable. The most spoken about discrimination at the moment in our country would be the education system. It is a very ppular pretest amongst non malays because students who score outstanding results in their SPM's were not given scolarships or places at local universities. As i said, they are the rightful owners and they do tend to receive a little bit extra and it is stupidity to keep whining about it and not do anything instead of embracing and finding a solution because the constitution is not going to change overnight.
The million dollar question here would whether or not we are being discriminated? My
answer would be absolutely NO. I think we the non-malays sometimes overdo the "i am discriminated" act. We are so free in this country we sometimes forget to appreciate the freedom and respect given to us. Discrimination would be not allowing us into restaurants, not allowing us to roam around cities or towns, not allowing us to receive an education, not allowing us to vote, not allowing us to use the same public toilets as the malays, not allowing us into shopping malls, chasing us out of bars, not allowing us to have our precious mamak sessions, not allowing us to have churches or temples, not allowing us to have indian streets or chinese streets, not allowing the sales of alcohol, and ultimately not allowing us to have profesional jobs or political positions. If u want to know what real discrimination was, try researching on what Americans did to the african Americans and you will know what real discrimination is. They had signboards outside buildings saying no dogs and blacks allowed. Blacks were slaves of their country and they we denied a life. That my friends is discrimination.
The truth is we have all of this and yet we complain that we are being discriminated. I have always feared that if we push the malays too hard, they would do exactly what we claim they are doing. Real discrimination will take place and theres not a damn thing we can do about it. Everything that i mentioned we have above will be taken away.
